The funniest thing about haters is that they’re still technically fans. Just very committed ones.

I’ve been described as a ‘heartless villain’ and a 'little shit’, but I prefer… 'has alternative ways of having fun’

As always, the music was loud enough to swallow every conversation. No matter where you walked, people paused for Instagram stories, for TikTok, for every possible social media channel — and as soon as they had captured the perfect picture, they turned their backs to each other as if they had never spoken a single word before. A typical elitist event, and as so often Verity was right in the middle of it. Of course, with the name Banks you ended up on every guest list. And as in not so rare cases, the blonde was bored. Yes, the villa was absurdly big, the estate somewhere in the hills of the city, and if she looked around here a little more she might even find some fun somewhere. But usually parties like these were only stuffed with people who were too refined to be loud and too perfect to actually have fun. Champagne flowed here in endless rows, the air was soaked with Chanel and Prada, and somewhere in the background a band was playing that probably earned more than an average person in a year. Everything like always, you could say. But she didn’t want to deal with this crowd anymore, exactly why she made her way toward the rooftop terrace of the estate. The night welcomed her with a noticeable warmth, however heavy with the noise of bass. She stepped around the few people standing there who gave her a acknowledging nod. From up here she had an incredible view over the buildings of Seattle. And over something much more interesting.. Something that for the first time that evening not only caught her attention, but also her interest. The villa’s parking lot lay half in darkness and was only lit by scattered garden lamps, but it was enough for her trained eye to sort every model. The cars stood neatly lined up behind each other, almost as if it were a status symbol. Even though Verity loved almost nothing as much as a fast car, she still found it crazy that there were simply cars standing there that sometimes cost more than entire city blocks. Most of them were predictable, nothing special. Ferraris, Lamborghinis, a few Rolls Royces.. all beautiful, expensive and fast — but in high society meanwhile also just average. Not in value, but in quantity.
The gaze of her watchful eyes moved on and finally found what it was looking for: it stuck on one car. She had almost not noticed the vehicle at all, because it stood a little apart, almost as if someone had intentionally not wanted to draw attention to it. The paint looked almost black in the lamp light and yet she recognized the lines immediately even from the distance. It looked perfectly balanced, and the blonde couldn’t help the corners of her mouth pulling upward. Now it finally gets interesting. The glass she had been holding the entire time she slowly placed on the balustrade without taking her eyes off that magnificent piece of a car even for a single second. Finally the evening had given her something that would make it interesting. She could practically feel the tingling in her fingers and legs. It wasn’t even about the car itself. Her father collected cars like others collected stamps. This was something else. It was about what was under the hood. The idea of starting exactly that engine. Hearing that deep rumble, feeling the vibration in the steering wheel. Being accompanied by the question whether you had control or the car did. Those horsepower under her fingertips. And as if it were the most normal thing, she studied the driveway more closely, began scanning everything around it, and in her head she was already putting together a plan. But she knew she couldn’t pull this off alone. Luckily there was someone else at this party she hoped would be ready for the next little.. crime chaos.
It was easy to find Romeo in this crowd. In fact it was harder to overlook him at all — not only because of the people around him but simply because of the way he moved. Even when the man stood still there was something so dynamic in his posture as if he were ready for any situation. And that was exactly the energy you needed for bad ideas, wasn’t it? And so Verity let go of the last moral sparks in her head and closed the distance. When she stopped in front of Romeo she didn’t say anything at first. Too many people, too many ears. So a first hint had to be enough — her gaze wandered toward the car and a small conspiratorial smile appeared on her lips. Her eyes began to shine as if chaos itself had found its home there. When a waiter walked past she casually grabbed a napkin and took a pen from the table decoration to write two short words on it: New car. It seemed, as it could hardly be otherwise, that Romeo understood what she was trying to tell him. So she quickly linked her arm with his and led him back to the balustrade; from there he had a much better view of the car while they also stood a little more apart from the rest of the event. “I want that one. Just for one round", her voice dripped with excitement. “Right now.” She let her arm slide from his and instead adjusted her blonde hair. “So, how do we best get the key? The streets are basically empty, and there are some good curves around here. Please tell me you’re in.” She let a short pause hang. “Just a quick trip.” Her gaze turned almost angelic, she even pushed her lower lip forward in such an exaggerated way that it looked like she was pouting. Did the whole thing have a real purpose? No. Was it legal? Also no. Could they get arrested for it? Hell, yes. Did she care? No. Because a Banks could afford to borrow a stranger’s car for a ride — but what would a driver be without his passenger princess?
